SAfari...a swahili word meaning [greater equal]to journey[less equal]. Since time immemorial, mankind has strengthened it[pi]s focus, inspired it[pi]s leaders, resolved it[pi]s problems and regained it[pi]s serenity and energy through such pilgrimages.
Africa has long been known as the cradle of mankind -the birth place of the human species.
-Around 40,000 years ago, our species is recorded to have experienced an explosion of creativity in Africa, that jump started innovation. At that time, new tools were not only created, they were also decorated, for what appears to be the shear pleasure of it.
An abundance of other forms of artwork evolved clothing decoration; jewellery; cave paintings; sculptures; hieroglyphics- an endless variety of symbolic representation of style conveying everything from social stature to interpretations of nature.
South Africa is again at the threshold of an African renaissance and an explosion of creativity manifesting itself through, philosophy, culture and it[pi]s cultural icons. We witness this new explosion of creativity as the groundwork for the evolution of design on the African continent, and we behold a paradigm shift where Africa converges with the world, exposing it[pi]s influence, -creating prosperity through it[pi]s cultural rebirth.
Design South Africa (DSA) invites you to partake in the unleashing of Africa[pi]s unique history and culture, current experiences and future visions.
[greater equal]WOZA![less equal]....a zulu word meaning [greater equal]come![less equal]

Urban Messages: From Billboard to Stamp
Instructor: Jean-Benoit Levy ( AGI )
V: San Francisco, USA
This course provides students with the opportunity to work with a well-known Swiss graphic designer and to explore how graphic design solutions are altered by cultural context. The class will investigate the relationship between oversized billboard messages, aimed at fast-moving cars on U.S. highways; large-scale advertisements, which target pedestrians in European streets; and postage stamps, which appear in everyone's home. Each student will create and adapt the same message to these three different formats: the U.S. billboard, the Swiss poster, and the postage stamp. This eight-week course will extensively explore, through the careful organization of the typeset message, the basic rules of graphic communication as they relate to the use of expressive typography. From the first sketch to the final presentation, this complex project is designed for the highly motivated student.
