common challenges.
Icograda Regional Meeting, Istanbul
An Icograda Regional Meeting was held in Istanbul on April 29 in conjunction with the Graphist Design Event. Held at Istanbul Bilgi University, the meeting brought together more than 20 professional designers and design educators from Turkey, Israel, Lebanon and Iran. The event, chaired by Icograda President David Grossman, Icograda Past President Guy Schockaert and Past Vice President Sadik Karamustafa, included official delegations from Icograda member associations GMK of Turkey, GDAI of Israel and newly accepted IGDS of Iran. Also participating were individual representatives of Lebanon where the graphic design community is in early stages of development. More than ten schools were represented.
As far as Icograda is concerned, the model is seen as successful. Icograda will continue to offer support for such meetings and distribute information through its communication network. Participants expressed satisfaction with the eNews and the new website and expect these media to help in regional contact and in providing direct Icograda benefits to individual members.
Icograda hopes that other regions will organise such meetings. Plans are already being planned for Icograda Regional Meetings in Seoul Korea, in conjunction with the Oullim Congress of Oct. 2000, and in Zagreb, Croatia in conjunction with a Board Meeting to be held in April 2001.

Pet peeves: what pisses designers off?
by Julia Ptasznik, editor Visual Arts Trends
W: http://www.VisualArtsTrends.com
In this week[pi]s Feature on Icograda website Julia Ptasznik, editor of Visual Arts Trends, presents in an article entitled <Pet Peeves> and summarizing the results of an intersteting survey: what pisses designers off?
< For dozens of years, we[pi]ve been bitching about clients who want to <move this there, make that bigger, and change this color.> We are still at it, but most grudgingly acknowledge that some things never change and move on to fights they can fight.
The reason for polling the creative community on the topic of pet peeves was that such responses could be viewed as, perhaps, the best indication of what[pi]s really going on in the industry. When we first put out our call, we expected to get back a lot of the same old, along the lines of clients still <not bloody paying for white space.> While we got some of that ( the jury is still out on the Mac vs. PC issue, but nobody really cares anymore ) surprisingly, the overall response demonstrated a shift in what pisses us off; there is a clearly defined move away from aesthetics to business-related issues. Designers know that information can be made visible in such a way that it is easily accessed and acted upon. However, innovative information management which should lead to corporate knowledge implies more than expert information graphics. It requires basic considerations and systematic thinking about the kind of information needed by a given corporation, its staff, suppliers and clients for specific purposes within given contexts. It also requires competence in building information structures which can be updated easily whenever needs and contexts change.
How to create corporate knowledge is an issue, now widely discussed by managers of corporations of all kinds. Vision Plus 8 provides a platform for the exchange of experiences and opinions on the subject. The floor is open for theoretical considerations as well as for demonstrations of effective applications, innovative concepts and unorthodox approaches.
