This week, we publish some thoughts on creating a design magazine by Max Bruinsma. This article by Max Bruinsma originally appeared in the pilot issue of <...> magazine (a new graphic design/visual culture magazine which we presented in our previous eNews)
Max Bruinsma is an independent design-writer, editor, critic and editorial designer, and former editor of Eye, the international review of graphic design.
>Let's start a magazine" was a battle call of the 1970's. In the wake of May '68, when imagination came to power riding high on Gestettner, Xerox and silk-screen machines, if you had something to say, something that the old bourgeois flag-bearers of Capitalism and Good Taste would no doubt decline to print on their ad-ridden pages, you brought together a band of like minds and you started a magazine...<
You want to know more on what is to be done to create a design magazine and what is not? Read about it at http://www.icograda.org in the Feature area.

"When deeds speak, words are nothing" African proverb
On Wednesday 8th March, 2000, the government of Zimbabwe passed a special communications bill through parliament. The implications of this bill are enormous, as aspects of it will force all email & internet service providers to allow the government to view ALL communications into & out of Zimbabwe, under the auspices of national security.
Prompted by this, on 21 March 2000 (Human Rights Day), an international call for entries was widely sent out to organisations, colleges, journals and individuals inviting designers to send images for an international agitprop exhibition website that would be constructed around the general theme of 'freedom of expression'.
Displaying their solidarity and concern for Zimbabwe's situation, a few graphic designers from around the world responded by applying their skills and imagination unselfishly to upholding this democratic principle. This scarce breed of communicators, display not only their bravery in adversity but also their resolve to use their talents in the fight against the more sordid aspects of humanity that are so rarely redressed by designers, because either -it is not lucrative, general apathy or these issues do not affect them directly.
The contibutors work draws attention to the importance of freedom of speech and the absurdity and dangers of this draconian piece of legislation which violates freedom of communication, guarantees of privacy and has universal implications for us all.
This cyberspace exhibition without boundaries called Agitnet, was launched on Thursday 25th May, 2000 (Africa Day) and will stay on the internet for at least 6 months and can be viewed and accessed at http://www.article7.org

Patent Law Treaty is Finalised
T: + 41 22 338 8161
F: + 41 22 338 8810
E: publicinf@wipo.int
Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on Thursday adopted by consensus an international treaty that will simplify and streamline procedures for obtaining and maintaining a patent. The Patent Law Treaty (PLT), which opens for signature on June 2, 2000, will enter into force once it has been ratified by ten countries.
Once it enters into force, the PLT will harmonize and streamline, on a worldwide basis, formal patent procedures relating to national and regional patent applications and maintenance of patents.

Post-Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property
T: + 41 22 338 8161
F: + 41 22 338 8810
E: publicinf@wipo.int
The University of Turin (Italy) and WIPO signed an agreement that paves the way for the granting of a joint post-graduate diploma in intellectual property law. The three-month course program is specifically designed for professors and professionals with grounding in intellectual property law who wish to acquire the knowledge and skills required to play a more active role in its teaching and practice.

Abitare welcomes graphic design!
T: + 39 02 6901 0476
F: + 39 02 6900 7873
E: lettera@abitare.it
Beginning with the June, 2000 issue, Italo Lupi's architecture and design magazine, Abitare, will be devoting a section, LETTERA, to graphic design.
LETTERA # 1, June 2000 will be opened by introducing the typographic work of Mauro Carichini, a font designer that matches pop culture references and a savvy use of the newest technology, coming up with a challenging and evocative aesthetic mix.
The international showcase focuses on the work of three graphic design ventures from Spain: Enric Aguilera Asociados, Pepe Gimeno, and OMB studio.
In the pages that deal with research and experimental projects, John Maeda's work is a perfect example of applying mathematics and software code to the specific needs of graphic design.
