"Communication Beyond Language," represents the significance of traditional typographic forms that "go beyond their documentational, communication attributes and become visual entities that resonate with energy, individualism and metaphors."

How Copywriters Contribute to Design
Commentary by designer John Isom
Copyright 2000, AIGA/MN Issues
Nothing. And everything. Depending on how they operate, that's what copywriters can contribute to design -- assuming their design associates let them. (...) The truth is, writers can contribute to design in many ways.

Back to Court!

E: leskelly@deltanet.com
W: http://arribavista.com
W: http://NetCopyrightLaw.com.
The first digital image copyright case (See previous Icograda Story by Julia Ptasznik on Icograda website) heads back to court, according to Leslie A. Kelly, Photographer, and Plaintiff in the first ever lawsuit charging an image search engine with copyright infringement. Kelly: "It is unfortunate that each of these organizations (new entrepreneurs) based their business model on theft of copyrighted material to support their business interests. While attitudes about the Net often seem to be straight out of the American wild west, those entrepreneurs who have based their business practices on theft are quickly finding out that existing copyright law does fit the Net and is being used to 'rein! them in[less equal]. Kelly lost his case in Federal Court when Judge Gary L. Taylor concluded that the "established importance of search engines" should not stand in the way of copyright issues. Kelly has retained the services of Arnold & Porter, Washington, DC, to represent him in his appeal. He is supported by the American Society of Media Photographers and Graphic Artists Guild, whose member's creative works are now threatened by Judge
Taylor's flawed decision.

Emigre 55: The Leisure Time Issue
Summer 2000
T: + 1 916 451 4344
F: + 1 916 451 4351
W: http://www.emigre.com
Centered on the desert photography of Bruce Licher and Rudy VanderLans, this issue shows how these two designers merge their personal photographic explorations with their graphic design work. Bruce Licher's segment features a series of panoramic photographs of desert landscapes and their application in the packaging and promotional design work for his band Scenic. VanderLans creates an unusual type specimen by mixing texts from the 1901 book "The Desert" by John C. Van Dyke with photographs from a recent road trip to the Mojave desert.

LETTERA: Abitare magazine's graphic design review
# 2, July/August 2000: <Far sighted vision>
E: bianca@planet.it
Seeing far and seeing beyond would be an accurate, if highly condensed summary of what this second issue of Lettera is about. In Bologna, Loew & Associati, an experimental workshop group, has evolved into a full-fledged service agency. In Lisbona, Atelier Ricardo Mealha conveys its style through a mix of club culture and Latin tradition. Finally, two italian artists, Maurizio Arcangeli and Clara Bonfiglio, seek new 'literal' ways of representing images.
