Max Bruinsma is former editor of Eye magazine. Before taking this post, Bruinsma was an established voice in the graphic design community of The Netherlands, where he worked as editor of the Dutch design magazine Items, published several books on graphic design, and taught at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. This interview addresses his views as teacher, editor, and critic, and the positioning of graphic design in the nexus of art and commerce.

Until recently there has been very little overlap between the Cognitive Psychology, Computer Graphics, AI and Graphics Design communities. The Smart Graphics Symposium intends to close these gaps. AI techniques have matured to the point of being usable by non specialists. Furthermore, these very techniques are likely to be the vehicle by which both principles from Graphics Design, and the results of research in cognitive aspects of visual representations will be integrated in next generation graphical interfaces.

Grafist 5 is organized by, Mimar Sinan University, Fine arts Faculty (MSU-GSF), Graphic Design Department, in Istanbul, with the endorsement of Icograda, International Council of Graphic Design Associations. It is basicly an educational event for students and young professionals and professional graphic designers as well. Grafist consists of lectures, workshops and exhibitions by international designers, student exchanges, publications and special events.
Last April, Shigeo Fukuda, Istvan Orosz, Leila Musfy, Kari Piippo, Uwe Loesch, Hendrik Dorgathen and 80 students from Lebanon, Israel, Korea, Italy, Germany, Greece, Sweden, Kosovo, Macedonia and Finland were among the guests of Grafist 2000.
Events and speakerslist will be anounced after the confirmation of invited designers,by the end of October 2000.
