Icograda board welcomes
three new member associations
Icograda announced today the addition of three new member associations -- from Czech Republic, Taiwan, and Yugoslavia. Provisional membership, which will be ratified at Icograda's next General Assembly in Johannesburg in September 2001, has been granted to the Association of Applied Graphics (AUG) in Czech Republic, Taiwan Poster Design Association (TPDA) in Taiwan, and the Association of Applied Arts Artists and Designers of Vojvodina (UPIDIV) in Yugoslavia. This brings the total number of Icograda member associations to 66, representing 43 countries.
In advance of an Asian Regional Meeting of graphic design associations and the Oullim 2000 Seoul Icograda Millennium Congress, the Board of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) met for three days for strategic planning and to conduct of Icograda's affairs. President David Grossman stated: "As we enter the new millennium, we strive to serve the diverse needs of both long standing design organizations, as well as those of new associations in emerging economies. We are the global umbrella body for the graphic design and visual communication profession, and we are excited to see the worldwide graphic design community coming together as never before.[less equal]
The Oullim 2000 Seoul Icograda Millennium Congress, with the central theme of [greater equal]Oullim -- the Great Harmony[less equal] will be held at COEX in Seoul, Korea from 25 -- 27 October, 2000. The event is sold out and promises to be a great success, with over 1600 delegates arriving from around the world.
The next Icograda Regional Meeting will be in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in January 2001, followed by a Regional Meeting in Zagreb, Croatia in April 2001. The 19th Icograda world congress, [less equal]Continental Shift 2001,[less equal] will take place in Sandton, South Africa in September 2001 in conjunction with Icograda's 19th General Assembly. The 20th General Assembly and world design congress, [greater equal]Look -- from Sight to Insight,[less equal] will be held in Nagoya, Japan in 2003.

Negotiators have agreed in principle on a set of provisions to protect marks and others industrial property rights in cyberspace in a bid to prevent conflicts related to the use of signs in the Internet.

Nippon Design Center Awarded in Bratislava
Nippon Design Center received both Icograda Excellence Award and ICSID Excellence Award for the ReDesign Project aimed to re-design everyday products made of paper for the 21st century (post-cards, toilet-papers, visas, matches, playing-cards, lamps, children-clothing etc.).
Gold medals were given to
1.Saratoga bed designed by Miha Klinar, Slovenia
2. Marimekko home decorative fabric designed by Maija Isola, Finland
3. Theatre posters for Celje Theatre designed by Joze Domjan, Slovenia
4. Vario Pac system CD-packiging designed by Klaus W. Gloger, Germany
5. Self-cleaning window designed by Dietmer Valentinitch, Austria

Unique position for graphic design practitioner/educator at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. As head of the program in 2D design, the individual will direct its vision, recruitment, visiting artists, instruction, travel and special events, as well as act as mentor to 15 graduate students. The individual must be unusually qualified to provide open, independent learning without set classes resulting in rigorous production, critique, discussion within a program renowned for research, radicality and non-dogmatic paradigms. The individual must have experience navigating through contemporary media (web, multi-media, video, sound, print, identity) as well as a demonstrable understanding of the bridge between theory and practice. As an artist-in-residence, the individual is encouraged to continue their studio practice and professional contributions at an international level.
