Inequitable Contractual Practices
are Still Prevalent
By Julia Ptasznik, editor, Visual Arts Trends
You don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate. The story is as old as life -- you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate. The clients seem to be much better at the latter than the artists, as we continue to give away things like copyright ownership for no additional compensation. Here we offer an analysis of an intellectual property provision used by a prominent international organization in its blanket contract for services, explain what it means, and what can be done about it.

American Institute of Graphic Arts of Minnesota Contributes $75,000 to the National Design Center, N.Y.
"Support for national activities has not always been easy to secure," says Doug Powell, past president of AIGA Minnesota. "This commitment signals a new shift in the way people perceive the importance of a cohesive, national organization."
The AIGA Minnesota's donation of $75,000 will support seven immediate initiatives:
1. Continue programs that involve the community and demonstrate the role of designers
2. Create outreach materials for clients and assist them in understanding the profession as well as the value of a professional graphic designer
3. Promote AIGA group memberships
4. Create a nationally available slate of speakers and programs for smaller AIGA chapters
5. Bring new disciplines into the community of graphic designers
6. Create a traveling exhibit on design and its value
7. Investigate programs that support independent and corporate designers
Contributions are still accepted by contacting the AIGA Minnesota office at:

BIO 17
C: Lenka Bajzelj
E: aml-pz@guest.arnes.si
BIO 17 attracted more than 350 participants from 17 countries, and what is more important, the overall quality proved to be of a high and international competitive level. Besides satisfaction there was dissatisfaction about the lack of entries related to design of services and new media, which is so relevant for the future development of our societies.
The jury bestowed 5 Gold Medals, 9 Honourable Mentions, 4 Good Project Awards, the BEDA European Design Award and the ICSID-ICOGRADA Exellence Award.
It is the first time in the history of this competition that both the ICSID and ICOGRADA Exellence Awards are given to one project. This project, named RE DESIGN, is an impressive achievement of a multidisciplinary group of Japanese designers. The jury unanimously voted for this project because it met all the criteria and presents outstanding solutions for a lot of extremly common items out of our daily lives.
