Portrait of the Families

Portrait of the Families is a poster created for [greater equal]Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan[less equal], which is the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community. [greater equal]Portrait of the Families[less equal] choreographed by Lin Hwai-min, is a 100 minutes collage of movement, voice and slide projection, spawned from the history of Taiwan, and exploring human pathos.
Liu Kai was born in 1957, and brought up in Tihua's street, one of the oldest districts in Taipei, Taiwan. 1978, he graduated from The Fu-hsin Trade and Arts School, majored in arts design. He has established his own arts studio since 1984.

Competitions [not equal] Good Or Bad?

Competitions are more and more commonly used in various fields of design. There can be various reasons for launching a design competition i.e. the client doesn't have the experience to choose a particular designer, or, he's more interested in the exposure involved than he is in good design. There's far more publicity to be had through arranging a poster competition than in just hiring a good graphic designer. The competition, from its traditional roots in architecture, has fostered design competitions covering everything from logos to bus stops, to the design of specific consumer goods.
Thomas Dickson is a product designer and board member for the Association of Danish Designers. He runs his own design office, Tomcat Design, and is also co-editor of the Danish design magazine Rum & Form and writes for several newspapers and magazines in Denmark.
