Graphic Design Organizations
to meet in Copenhagen

On 24-25 January 2001, an Icograda Regional Meeting for Western Europe will be held at the Danish Design Center in Copenhagen. This unique meeting will bring together representatives of European professional graphic design and visual communications associations for an exchange of information and viewpoints. The meeting will provide the opportunity for participants to discuss the state of the graphic design profession, to compare new challenges, and to revitalize links with colleagues.

Participation in this Icograda Regional Meeting is restricted to representatives of professional design associations, design promotion centers or design education institutions -- whether or not they are members of Icograda.

Discussion topics will include:
1: Graphic Design in Western Europe: achievements, needs, problems and challenges?
2: the impact of new technologies on graphic design business?
3: multi-disciplinary design practice -- a practical reality?
4: globalization and international markets -- creation of business abroad?
5: Graphic Design Education -- changing needs and opportunities?
6: exchange of knowledge and collaboration with designers in emerging economies?
7: How can Icograda best help graphic designers in Western Europe?

Macbeth
Designed by Esen Karol, GMK, Turkey

[greater equal]Macbeth[less equal] is a poster designed for a play performed by [greater equal]Rustaveli[less equal], the State Theater of Georgia for their one night performance in Istanbul. It is not a general poster for Shakespeare's famous Macbeth and does not try to interpret Shakespeare's text. It is rather a poster of Rustaveli's performance and tries to emphasize their interpretation of the text.

Esen Karol. Born 1967 in Ankara. BA in Graphic Design, Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul. MS with Fulbright Scholarship in Graduate Communications Design Department, Pratt Institute, New York. She teaches typography at Graphic Design Department, MSU, Istanbul. She works in her own design studio primarily for cultural clients, specializing in publication design.

Picture stuff is a bit trickier than it looks
By Colin Wood, Design Graphics

There are countless myths and legends concerned with the search for meaning. And if the journey falls a little short of expectations, and no meaning is apparent, then we seem to be content to settle for relevance. If that fails to materialise, then just being there may be as much comfort as we can muster...
