> Board meets in Barcelona
The Icograda Board met in Barcelona between the 16/19 of January and worked long hours on a full agenda. Education, communications, professional practice and the development of an events programme in collaboration with member associations were high priority items. On Monday the 16 of January a formal meeting took place with the representatives of Icograda's member associations in Spain: AEPD, Madrid, ADP, Barcelona and AGD/FAD Barcelona and members of the BCD. Former Vice Presidents of Icograda, Amand Domench and Arcadi Moradell also attended. The Board welcomed Ms. Sanja Rocco, President, Graphic Design Section ULUPUH, Croatia and Director of ZGRAF 8 to the Board. Ms. Rocco has been co-opted to the Board following the resignation of Ms. Zdenka Burianova last October. In welcoming Sanja Rocco to the Board the President paid tribute to Zdenka Burianova and thanked her for her contribution.

> Twenty-Fifth Icograda/Sappi London Seminar, February 22-23, 1999
There is still time to register for this great celebration of twenty-five years of graphic and communication design. Under the Chairmanship of Mervyn Kurlansky, AGI, the seminar will celebrate the contribution graphic design has made to the last quarter of the twenieth century. A premier viewing of a specially commissioned multi-presentation "Masters of the 20th Century - The Icograda Hall of Fame" will be seen on Monday 22 at the Odeon Cinema in London. The main thrust of the seminar will be forward looking. It will look at how designers can respond in a more powerful way to the challenges facing societies throughout the world as we whirl towards the 21st century. The Seminar is being run in association with D&AD (British Design and Art Direction) and their President Richard Seymour will address complex design problems through multi-disciplinary input, teamwork, sustainability and designing the future. Social responsibility at global and local level will be addressed by Jon Turner, Director of International Design for the Body Shop and Alain le Quernec, AGI, France. David Redhead, Editor of Design Magazine will evaluate the contribution of graphic design to industry, commerce, culture, politics and social issues. P. Scott Makela, USA will present his innovative work for film, music and the web. Afternoon workshops on editorial design and typography will be free to registered delegates. > Icograda World Graphics Day, April 27, 1999
The theme for 1999 Icograda World Graphics Day is "Icograda forests - Some Paper Back to Nature" Sadik Karamustafa, Chairman, says that graphic designers use paper as a tool and communication medium. Paper mainly comes from wood and although some countries have programmes to replant trees, throughout the 20th century forests have been depleted to produce paper. Graphic Designers "owe nature", hence the theme for 1999 and beyond. Icograda calls on Member Associations, designers, schools and Friends to begin planting "Icograda Forests". This is a project which can be begun on Icograda World Graphics Day in 1999 and continued ad infinitum. GMK graphic designers in Turkey will raise money for trees by creating products and works of art out of waste paper and sell them. Purchasers of the products and designers will have trees planted in their names. Icograda invites all designers to celebrate April 27 with tree planting ceremonies. Please send details of the trees you will plant and where so that a world map of Icograda forests can be created.

The dates have been changed slightly and the event will run from June 28 to July 3 in Seoul Korea. Attendance is limited to 45 Korean educators and students and 45 international participants. Workshop leaders will include Michael O'Roke of Pratt, John Maeda of MIT, Frukawa Taku, Japan, David Crow, England, Hennig Wagenbreth, Berlin and Dan Boyarski of Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh.
