Finally, the first digital Joseph Binder Award catalogue has appeared. A CR-Rom on which the trend-setting works of the winning candidates from Austria, Germany and Switzerland can be looked at either in the form of abbreviated originals or via direct links. The lates edition of the Joseph Binder Awarrd was devoted to digital design and the new media.

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design is seeking a Chair for its Design Division.
The Design Chair is responsible for providing leadership and management as head of the Design Division. She/he will evaluate faculty, advise students, teach across the Design curriculum, and work as a member of the institution's academic team to develop and implement curriculum changes. The Chair will be dedicated to expanding and strengthening links with the professional community.
Qualifications include superior teaching and professional credentials with demonstrated managerial skills and leadership potential. Candidate will demonstrate particular skills in one of the majors and have experience in computer based design processes and new media. The Chair will possess excellent interpersonal skills and afford vision, guidance, and advocacy for faculty. Master's Degree or equivalent desired.  Salary range $56,000-$60,000 commensurate with educational and professional experience.

NEW KIDS JOURNAL ON-LINE
The first DX (Design Xchange, Toronto, Canada) publication specifically geared to students and educators (named Re:Design) will be launched on Dec. 3. The first issue was written,
designed and created by high school students in the Cyberarts Program at
Don Mills Collegiate.  A variety of professionals visited the students and

OM'NIUM -- VIRTUAL DESIGN STUDIO 1999
om'nium was conducted in July and August 1999, and involved students from
geographically distanced design colleges working collaboratively to produce
design solutions using the Internet as a communication tool.  This project
was featured at the Sydney DECA Conference '99.

The main themes of CIR-2000 are video asset management, and image indexing and metadata, and content-based image retrieval. The 2000 event aims to bring together researchers and practitioners in the area of image data management, to exchange information and gain some idea of the significance of developments in related disciplines. It should be of interest to researchers in fields as diverse as information retrieval, database, computer vision and image processing, human visual perception and interface design, as well as users and managers of image and video libraries.
Original papers are solicited for the conference describing research or innovation in any area related to image or video storage and retrieval. Accounts of work in progress are acceptable provided at least some results are reported.

Smart Graphics aims to move beyond the current requirement that designers anticipate every data, task and technological scenario, and instead allow the dynamic generation and presentation of content in such a manner that: (1) engages the user and is aesthetically satisfying; (2) takes account of cognitive insights as to the use of external representations, for example, minimizing potential for imprecision and ambiguity; (3) is sensitive to the real-time demands of the task in the context of available computational resources; and (4) adapts the form of the output according to constraints placed on the presentation by the nature of the target media and available interaction devices.

CHI-2000 is the pre-eminent annual user-interface design conference. Aaron Marcus will lead a one-day tutorial about cultural diversity in user-interface design. His co-presenters are Prof. Donald Day, Towson University, USA; Prof. Emilie Gould, Rensselaer Polytechnic University, USA; and Dr. Pia Honold, Siemens, Germany.
