In late 2003, the Victorian government commissioned a study into the state's design capabilities, with a view to enhancing and promoting Victoria's position as a regional (ie. Asia-Pacific) hub for design. Design in this context refers to all disciplines, eg. Architecture to product design to graphic / digital design.

The output of that work covers three main topics:

  • future directions: the key next steps in partnership with the design community
  • research: review of Victorian key facts & figures, plus reviews of how government has worked with the design community in other countries
  • case studies: five examples of Victorian businesses using design as a key business driver

This work represents important steps in the right direction of recognising the value that design adds to Australia from a cultural and economic perspective. Clearly there is a lot more work to do, but it is heartening to see a major State government moving in this direction.
